The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host the annual Multi-County Reproduction Management Workshopon May 9 at the Tom Brothers Ranch, 770 County Road 412 in Campbellton.

The event is put on by the AgriLife Extension agriculture and natural resources agents of Atascosa, Wilson, Bexar, Frio, Live Oak, McMullen and Medina counties.

The cost is $30, and the event will run from 9 a.m.-noon. Lunch is included and sponsored by IDEX, which will also supply attendees with OnFarm Pregnancy Test sample kits.

Space is limited and participants must RSVP by May 2 by calling AgriLife Extension agent Dale Rankin at the Atascosa County office at 830-569-0034.

“Our reproduction management class is designed to help producers learn how to increase their breeding program productivity,” Rankin said. “We’ll cover the importance of getting cows bred and increasing the number of live calves, which in turn increases profitability.”

Participation in the workshop requires attendees to bring three to five docile cows that have been exposed to a bull in the past 90 days and possibly one cow that is open.

Rankin said the ability to use these cows as teaching tools allows the course to be presented at a minimum cost to participants.

“Attendees will gain a better understanding of a cow’s reproductive anatomy and the estrus cycle and learn about body condition scoring and how to age cattle,” said Sam Womble, AgriLife Extension agriculture and natural resources agent for Bexar County.

Reproduction management topics and speakers

Joe Paschal, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension livestock specialist, Corpus Christi, is the guest speaker and will do a rectal palpation demonstration and exercise. Supplies will be provided for attendees. The AgriLife Extension agents of the hosting counties will also be presenters. The topics covered will be:

  • The Ins and Outs of Pregnancy Testing.
  • Hands-on Anatomy of a Cow’s Reproductive Tract.
  • Rectal Palpation.
  • Estrus Synchronization Made Easy.
  • Reproductive Diseases.
  • Body-Condition Scoring.
