More Pounds, More Profit--Implanting calves increases operational performance

With the cattle market in constant flux, producers are putting an even greater emphasis on implants as a means to increase pounds and dollars at every stage of a calf’s life.

“Implants change the rate at which animals deposit muscle, and it makes them more efficient in dietary protein utilization, transferring protein to muscle,” said Daniel Scruggs, DVM, managing veterinarian for Zoetis. “More pounds on cattle can equate to more profit for the producer.”

Using an implant, like SYNOVEX® C, in younger cattle can benefit cows and calves, as well as stocker or backgrounder producers, with more pounds. Implants contain hormones that are released over time to help improve an animal’s growth and optimize the process of converting feed to muscle. Depending on the intended marketing goal, implant options offer varying amounts and proportions of active ingredients to achieve those goals. Implanting in younger cattle can begin as early as 45 days of age.

When calves are on the cow and nursing, gaining 1.5 to 2 pounds a day, you can anticipate you’ll have between 15 and 22 pounds additional weaning weights on the calves, if they’ve been implanted,” Dr. Scruggs said. “Calves receive a lower-dose implant and see the greatest amount of gain while being adequately nourished.”

It’s important to remember calves must already be gaining weight to make a difference in added weight gain. Implant calves when they’re nursing the cow, on nutritious grass pastures or being supplemented with feed. If cattle aren’t receiving proper nutrition, the benefit of the implant will be reduced.

“The more groceries you put in them, the more flexible your implant program can be,” Dr. Scruggs said.
