Rocker Ranch receives first annual A.A. McAllen Performance Award

published: December 13th 2002
source: BBU

For the first time in Beefmaster history, the A.A. McAllen Perfor-mance Award was presented during the 2002 Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU) convention on October 26, 2002, in San Antonio, TX. Tim and Carol Wilson of the Rocker Ranch, Gail, TX, were the recipients of this prestigious award.

The A.A. McAllen Performance Award was developed “to promote performance breeding and encourage the raising of quality cattle in order to achieve the highest standards within the beef industry”, says James McAllen, grandson of the late A.A. McAllen, for which the award is named. McAllen adds, “The involvement of registered breeders in performance testing will reflect their desire to improve individual herds for the good of the industry and the advancement of the Beefmaster Breed”.

The award is presented to the consignor of the highest performing bull in the A.A. McAllen Perfor-mance Test, held on the McAllen Ranch near Linn, TX. Once the final data are collected, ratios are computed for average daily gain (ADG), weight per day of age (WDA),  rib eye area (REA), marbling (MARB), and scrotal circumference (SC). These  ratios are utilized in a weighted index to arrive at an objective score of overall performance. The index consists of 30% ADG, 30% WDA, 15% REA, 15% MARB, and 10%SC. The winning Rocker Ranch entry outperformed the contending entry by nearly four percentage points. All bulls in the test are ranked using this index.
