Thirty head of purebred Simbrah steers owned by Pine Ridge Ranch, Athens, Texas were harvested recently with outstanding results. After 210 days on feed, the calf-fed steers produced an average age at harvest of 15 months and nine days. The steers were fed at Lubbock Feeder, L.P, Lubbock, Texas and were on a hormone-free management regimen.
Simbrah steers produced impressive results with a 76.7% grading Choice, 23.3% Select with no lower Quality Grades, which are typically discounted. Yield Grades were equally superior with 80% scoring YG 1 and 2, and just 20% at YG 3. None were of the heavily discounted excessively fat YG 4 and 5. The average hot carcass weight for the 30 steers was 839 pounds, with an average dressing percent of 64%.
The Pine Ridge steers clearly illustrate the quality being produced within the Simbrah breed. They excelled in quality while proving flexibility in marketing by maintaining a higher percentage of Yield Grade 1’s and 2’s. They could continue to be fed without yield grade discounts if the market appeared to be more favorable in the near future. By contrast, many “mainstream” cattle today will have a high percentage YG 3’s at this percent choice and will be fast approaching excessively fat cattle that will be discounted if fed longer.
