The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will hold the 51st annual South Central Texas Cow-Calf Clinic and Trade Show on Oct. 28 in Brenham. The clinic will focus on sustainability in beef cattle production with conversations covering economics, genetics, feeding and more.

Temple Grandin, Ph.D., Colorado State University, will be the keynote speaker. Grandin is an educator, author and well-known livestock equipment designer.

The clinic will take place at the Washington County Expo – Sales Facility, 1305 E. Bluebell Road. Onsite registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. with the program from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Early registration is $20 by Oct. 25 at https://tx.ag/Oct28CowCalf. After that date, the cost will be $30 at the door.

The registration fee provides admission to the clinic, an opportunity to visit with tradeshow vendors, refreshments, a catered barbecue lunch, an afternoon social and a ticket for a chance to win the grand door prize of a heifer.

Event organizers said the day will be packed full of great presentations, live cattle demonstrations, and will include several contests for participants to test their knowledge and skills with awards sponsored by Capital Farm Credit.

One Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education unit in law and regulations is available. The session must be selected when registering and it will provide a Picolinic Acid/Invora Herbicide Update sponsored by Bayer Range and Pasture.

This session will provide information on using the Invora herbicide chemistry and complete the mandatory training to purchase and use the product for brush control including huisache.

Cow-Calf clinic speakers, topics

The clinic will let attendees hear from industry experts to aid in making sound management decisions for beef cattle operations

The program topics were prepared based on the regions pressing beef cattle issues as determined by the Beef and Forage Committees from Austin, Brazos, Burleson, Colorado, Fayette, Grimes, Harris, Lee, Waller and Washington counties.

The 2022 agenda welcomes other expert speakers, including David Anderson, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension economist, Bryan-College Station, and Joe Paschal, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension livestock specialist, Corpus Christi.

Program topics for the event include:

  • Supplemental Feeding and Forage Systems for Cattle Producers Dealing with Drought.
  • Understanding Carbon Credits and Carbon Sequestration from a Rancher’s Perspective.
  • Identifying Traits in Beef Cattle for the Long Haul.
  • Understanding the Value of Grazing Livestock for the Sustainability and Future of Agriculture.
  • Market Recap and Beef Cattle Update.

Social hour, scholarship drawing

At the conclusion of the clinic, there will be a social hour sponsored by Mike Hopkins Distributing featuring beer-battered beef tips. Fifteen prizes will be awarded, valued at over $34,000, as part of the fourth annual South Central Texas Cow-Calf Clinic Scholarship Drawing.

Only 500 tickets will be sold; all proceeds go toward scholarships for youth and youth cow-calf programs. Visit https://washington.agrilife.org/ag/sctcccdrawing/ to buy tickets online.
