Series of Last Chance Webinars offered online for pesticide applicators

A group of Last Chance Webinars for pesticide applicator continuing education units in Texas is being offered beginning Nov. 1 as a part of the Texas Range Webinar Series hosted by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service unit of the Texas A&M University Department of Ecosystem Science and Management.

The CEU roundup of webinars will be available through the end of the year, said Pete Flores, AgriLife Extension webinar coordinator in Corpus Christi. Participants seeking Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units must pay a $10 fee online per webinar.

“This allows the opportunity to scratch off up to five of the 15 CEUs private applicators need every three years,” said Megan Clayton, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension range specialist, Corpus Christi. “Ten of the 15 CEUs can come from recorded sources such as the Last Chance Webinars.

“Hopefully offering this opportunity for people to complete CEUs from the comfort of their own computer, at any time of the day for the next two months, will not only help to meet their pesticide applicator needs but also serve as an important educational opportunity,” Clayton said.

The webinars, presenters and CEUs being offered are:

– Preparing for Brush Herbicide Treatments: Equipment, timing and application methods can drastically vary the effectiveness of brush herbicide treatments. This webinar will cover the basics of how and what to look for before heading to the field to treat brush this season. Bob Lyons, Ph.D., Texas A&M University ecosystem science and management associate department head and AgriLife Extension range specialist in Uvalde, one general CEU.

– Prickly Pear Management: Prickly pear is a common invasive plant on rangelands throughout Texas, this plant limits forage growth and forage access for livestock and wildlife on Texas Rangelands. This webinar will discuss various prickly pear management methods in preparation for the 2019 prickly pear spray season. James Jackson, AgriLife Extension range specialist, Stephenville, one integrated pest management CEU.

– Ranching Apps for Tablets and Smartphones: As the popularity of smartphones and tablets rise, so do the number of applications available to use with them. But which are really helpful for ranching purposes? This webinar will cover a variety of apps, where to find them, the basics of how they work, and how you might be able to apply them to your current ranching activities. Bryan Davis, AgriLife Extension county agent, Wilson County. One integrated pest management CEU.

– Selection and Management of Introduced and Native Grasses: Selection of the most adapted grass for your climate and soil is the first step to successfully establish a pasture. Proper management during planting, establishment and beyond are crucial for pasture persistence and productivity. This webinar reviews options for introduced and native species and their management for pasture renovation and maintenance, including the use of herbicides. Jamie Foster, Ph.D., Texas A&M AgriLife Research forage agronomist, Beeville, one integrated pest management CEU.

– Texas Pesticide Laws and Regulations: This webinar will cover state and federal laws that impact private, commercial and noncommercial licensed applicators. Mark Matocha, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension agricultural and environmental safety specialist, College Station, one laws and regulations CEU.
