published: April 19th 2019
The Rio Grande Valley Beef Improvement Asso-ciation (RGVBIA) recently concluded their annual RGVBIA All Breed Per-formance Bull Test and Sale. This is the 20th annual bull test they have conducted under the direction of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, the Cooperative Extension Program at Prairie View A & M Uni-versity and with the assistance of Dr. Joe Paschal, Extension livestock specialist. The cattle were scanned by Donnie Ro-bertson and fed at Rio Beef Feedyard. There were 88 bulls and 42 heifers tested this year. The test is open to all breeds of beef cattle and producers from anywhere.
The bulls are measured for average daily gain, weight per day of age, rib-eye area per/cwt., marbling and scrotal circumference. They are ratioed by breed and divided into four age divisions. Only the top half of the three older age divisions qualify for the sale. The youngest division is optional.
The top selling bull in this year's sale was the intermediate champion Brahman, a polled bull, consigned by La Muneca-Flores Cattle Co. He sold for $4,500 to Jonathan Winn from Arkansas. The second top selling bull was a polled Simbrah consigned by LMC Daydream Partners. He sold for $4,000 to La Muneca Cattle and Victor Guerra from Texas.  The top selling Santa Gertrudis bull was the intermediate champion consigned by Lazy JV Ranch. The polled bull sold for $2,700 to Keaton Bush from Texas.
Overall, 30 bulls of three breeds sold for an average of $2,168 to producers in Arkansas, Ken-tucky, Louisiana, Oklaho-ma and Texas.
