Gulf Coast Cattleman magazine publisher E. C. Larkin, Jr. of San Antonio, Texas was recently named as the Texas Brahman Association’s 2010 Beef Booster of the Year. Since 1962, the Texas Brahman Association has recognized a deserving person or entity for outstanding contributions to the beef industry and counts a distinguished list of industry leaders, doers, and thinkers among its recipients.
TBA President Lex Forgason of Hungerford, Texas said “E. C. Larkin is a most deserving recipient of this year’s award for outstanding leadership and service to the industry through his magazine the Gulf Coast Cattleman. He has served livestock producers and all of Texas agriculture well and has done it for many years.”
E. C. Larkin is an East Texas native having gone to school in the small community of Brookston where he went to grades 1-12 in the same school house. He graduated from college in four years after first going to Paris Junior College, then to East Texas State University in Commerce. E. C. entered the livestock publication field by first working for Doan Agri-culture Service, The American Polled Hereford and the Western Livestock Journal before buying in 1975, the then 40 year old Gulf Coast Cattleman that was published out of Beaumont.
Shortly after marrying Margie Gawlik of San Antonio, E. C. moved the magazine to San Antonio where their three children were born. All three of their children are graduates of Texas A & M and have to date presented three grand children whom E. C. calls the “wrecking crew”.
E. C. earned an FFA American Farmer Degree, has been a member and President of the Livestock Publications Council and inducted into their Hall of Fame. He is a member and past president of the South Texas Farm & Ranch Club, a member and past president of the Texas Purebred Cattle Alliance. He has been inducted into the Beefmaster Breeders United’s Hall of Fame and in 1994 was named the American Brahman Breeders Association’s Friend of the Year. E. C. is a certified Texas Real Estate Broker and a certified Texas Auctioneer.
J. D. Sartwelle, Jr., a past TBA President and Brahman breeder from Sealy made the actual presentation of the award during the Texas A & M Beef Cattle Short Course on August 2nd, said “This recognition of E. C. Larkin’s contributions to and concerns for Texas Agriculture and the livestock industry are a tribute to what he has done every day for many years for the industry that he has been dedicated to.”
The Texas Brahman Association was organized in 1961 to promote the use of Brahman cattle in general and Texas Brahman cattle in particular. Brahman cattle are crossbreeding’s Common Denominator and #1 in heat tolerance, hybrid vigor and efficiency. The Brahman F1 is known as the “Queen of Cow Country” and is the most trouble free cow in use today.
