Cattleman’s conference set for March 9 in Canton

CANTON – The Upper Sabine Cattleman’s Conference is scheduled for March 9 at the Van Zandt County Fairgrounds, 24742 Texas Highway 64 in Canton. 

“Moving the Upper Sabine Cattleman’s Conference to the fairgrounds allows us to have live animal demonstrations as well as more room for our vendors to bring larger equipment,” said Tommy Phillips, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service agent in Van Zandt County. 

The program is co-sponsored by AgriLife Extension offices in Kaufman, Rains and Van Zandt counties and their livestock and forage committees.

Registration is $25 per person and includes a barbecue plate lunch and refreshments. Those interested should RSVP to the AgriLife Extension offices in Kaufman, Rains or Van Zandt counties no later than 4 p.m. March 5 to make lunch reservations.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. followed by the program at 9 a.m.  

Topics and speakers include:

–        Texas Ag-Related Traffic Laws and Regulations – Sgt. David Yarberry, Texas Department of Public Safety, Tyler.  

–        Low-stress Cattle Handling Demonstration – Dr. Ron Gill, AgriLife Extension livestock specialist, College Station. 

–        Bull Selection – Gill.

–        Beef Herd Health Management and Parasite Control – Dr. Tim Eberhart, Canton Veterinary Clinic, Canton.

–        Weed and Brush Control in Pastures and Hay Meadows – Ethan Westfall, Dow Agroscience, College Station.

Two Texas Department of Agriculture integrated pest management continuing education units will be available to pesticide applicators. Two Beef Quality Assurance credits will also be available.
