Feedlot Report

published: February 19th 2010
by: Dr. Marcus A. Hoelscher

Feedyards managers reported that performance of cattle finished in January was generally satisfactory for this time frame. However, managers point out that winter feeding conditions will slow performance and increase cost of production in future months.
Steers were placed on feed at 751 lbs., marketed at 1,306 lbs. and gained 3.45 lbs. daily for 161 days. Steers fed for $76.88 per cwt., up $1.25 when compared to the previous month.
Heifers were placed at 703 lbs. and fed to 1,218 lbs. Heifers gained 3.14 lbs. daily for the 164 day feeding period. Cost of gain was $79.59, up $1.24 per cwt.
Cost of rations for February range from $225 to $235 per ton on a dry basis. Costs were down due to lower grain prices.
With an $85 fed cattle market, unhedged cattle continue to lose $80 to $90 per head. One year ago cattle feeders were reporting losses in excess of $200 per head with an $87 fed cattle market.
Recent rains will improve wheat pasture grazing conditions in most all areas. Stock ponds are in good shape.
Feedyard managers continue to move cattle from their show lists. Show lists are current.
