Performance of cattle finished in May was satisfactory. Gains and conversions were comparable to the previous month.
Cost of gain continues to vary among yards. Late winter storms hurt performance in some areas.
Steers were placed on feed at 708 lbs., finished at 1262 lbs. and gained 3.36 lbs. daily for 165 days. Cost of gain was $83.89 per cwt.
Heifers were placed at 671 lbs., finished at 1158 lbs. and gained 2.92 ft. daily for 167 days. Heifers fed for $87.60 per cwt.
Cost of rations for June are higher than the previous month. Rations range from $245 to $256 per ton on a dry basis. Corn is priced in the range of $9.00 per cwt. Alfalta hay is at $140 to $150 per ton.
Feedyards are in the process of contracting silage. Corn and sorghum silage is priced at $38 and $36 per ton, respectively,
Cattle feeders are reporting losses of $20 to $40 per head with an $85 fed cattle market. One year ago they reported losses of $40 to $60 per head with a $98 market.
Recent rains have been welcomed by livestock producers. Grazing conditions and surface pond levels have been improved.
Market analysts project a larger supply of fed cattle for the spring and summer months. Increased numbers could lead to a lower fed cattle market.
