Executive Director’s Report...

published: February 9th 2018
by: Bill Hyman

Don’t let the recent Fever Tick Quarantine releases fool you. There are still plenty of tick infested premises in other areas waiting to explode this spring. Although ICA and other Texas organizations recently requested new tick eradication methods in the southern most areas of our state be implemented by USDA, the ticks remain there and all along our border with Mexico. From Del Rio to Brownsville, the fight to eradicate the fever tick continues. With many pastures now vacated of cattle, the deer, red deer and Nilgai continue to provide hosts for the ticks. The use of ivermectin treated corn and molasses tubs are only in place during the non-deer hunting months. With spring coming soon: the fever tick bloom will be upon us shortly. Thank goodness the Texas Legis-lature listened to ICA and gave the Texas Animal Health Commission additional funds to battle the ticks. Hopefully with several of the recently quarantined areas cleaned up and released, the TAHC and USDA personnel can concentrate more on the traditional fever tick areas along the border. Dr. Andy Schwartz, TAHC director and state veterinarian, told the ICA Board of Direc-tors two weeks ago that he hoped the Live Oak Coun-ty area would be released from quarantine this year. ICA certainly appreciates the hard work being done by the TAHC and USDA personnel in South Texas.

ICA will have a booth at the San Antonio Rodeo in conjunction with the All Breeds Sale on February 13  and 14. Drop by and say hello if you can make it.
The Southeast Texas ICA Chapter is gearing up for their annual commercial bull and female sale in Beaumont on March 9 & 10. If you are wanting top quality replacement cattle, this is the place to be in March. The complimentary meal on Friday night features a shrimp gumbo supper and is as good as it gets in my personal 15 years of sampling there.
