Buck Taylor roping
a success
The 12th Annual Buck Taylor SCTICA Team Roping was held in Seguin, Texas on Saturday, April 1, 2017.
The team roping was a huge success. Seguin is a great location and facility, the weather was perfect and many directors helped set-up and tear-down the event. “We can only say great things about the day,” said SCTICA President, Gus Gonzalez, “We have terrific sponsors with great products for us to market and great support from our members. Ropers always come to participate and we appreciate them.”

CVICA directors and wives meet
Each year the directors, officers, wives and special guests gather together at Swiss Alp for a potluck dinner. Scholarship winners are invited and are introduced to CVICA officers and directors.
Bill Hyman, ICA executive director, gave the chapter an update on state and federal legislation as it concerns CVICA and then the chapter presented a 2017 donation to the state office.

Membership and participation grows in chapter
We have had a wonderful first half of the year in attendance, speakers and membership drive.  We challenged ourselves to see who could enroll new members with added incentives and the response was great.  Within a few months we added 13 new members.
April 24, at the Seguin Cattle Company, with an attendance of about 120 folks, we had the privilege of having Dr. Don L. Renchie as our guest speaker.  Dr. Renchie is president of the American Association of Pesticide Safety Educators.  He gave an entertaining and knowledgeable presentation on laws and regulations.  Everyone who attended found it to be very informative and  look forward  to having him again.
Our next meeting was May 22 at the Seguin Cattle Company with about 90 attending.  The excitement that evening was the scholarship recipients from the Guada-Coma Chapter.  Three high school seniors and one upper classman were given $1,000 scholarships for outstanding work and academics in their respective fields.
Doriann Damerau, our college recipient, is the daughter of James and Gail Damerau.  She finished  her first year at Blinn and is pursuing a degree in plant and environmental soil sciences.  She will be doing an internship this summer with National Resource Conservation Services – Guadalupe, Hays and Comal counties.
Allie Burns, daughter of member Darin and Colinda Burns, hails from Marion High School.  Throughout her school years, she has been heavily involved in 4-H and FFA.  She has won regional and state judging team awards and is the Guadalupe Valley District FFA Vice President.  She will be at-tending Blinn in Brenham to study ag business.
Lindsie Harvey is the daughter of James and Cindy Harvey and granddaughter of long time members, Hilmer and Leola Cowey.  She attended Grace Christian Academy and throughout her schooling she was involved in high school rodeo, where she was Region 6 vice president.  She placed in the top six in barrel racing at the Texas High School State Finals.  She will be attending Texas Tech University and study animal science.
Jake Wright of Navarro High School is the son of member Gordan Land and Natalie Land and Patrick and Jill Wright.  Jake is an all-state linebacker, San Antonio All Star football player and a recipient of the Elite Quarterback Club award.  He will be attending Howard Payne Un-iversity, playing football for the Hornets and will pursue a career in criminal justice to become a game warden.  Congratulations to all the recipients.
The presentation at our May 22 meeting featured Donny Richter and Benno Luensmann, who gave a live demonstration and dialogue on live feeder cattle.  They gave insights for marketing cattle and calves.  Members learned what buyers are looking for in cattle, and how lack of body muscle, bone structure and size can be attributed to a less than desirable price.  A fleshy animal can also deter a good price per pound.  They also pointed out that keeping up with vaccinations, ear tags and castrating also adds value, and that a quality bull will always add value to your herd.
It was mentioned that the folks that have the VetGun have a new product out that can do more than deter flies.  Our next meeting and presentation will be Sept. 25th.  This will be exciting, so we expect to see you there.  Have a great summer.

Meeting scheduled
for June 6th
Howdy Folks! Hope everyone is doing well and has had some beneficial rain. In our area, the rainfall has fallen short.
The next chapter meeting will be held Tuesday, June 6th at 6:30 p.m. at Chisholm Trail BBQ in Lockhart.  We have Lauren Graham with Texas Farm Credit coming to speak to us about their services.  The details of the field day will be discussed at the next chapter meeting, also.  In the meantime, we are continuing to search for a great host ranch. If you would like to host or know of someone who has a great place and is willing, please let us know. As always, it will be a good chapter meeting with good food.
The 43rd Annual ICA Convention & Trade Show is fast approaching! We invite you, your families and even friends to come and learn from the speakers, enjoy the fellowship with other cattlemen and women, eat good food, and attend the great tradeshow. The event will feature a dance night and headliner Julie Borlaug of Texas A&M Research Center. Mark your calendars for June 21-23, 2017 at the Embassy Suites in San Marcos. It’s going to be a wonderful time.  Make this a family vacation with a swimming pool and spa at the hotel. Hope to see you there!
Look forward to seeing you at the chapter meeting.
Pray for rain and pray for our nation.
