Cattlemen’s Capitol Concerns

NCBA Participates in 2010 International Livestock Congress
Producers, packers, retailers, students and other industry leaders gathered together this week for the annual International Livestock Congress-USA (ILC-USA 2010). Colin Woodall, vice president of government affairs at the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) was one of the featured speakers at the event, titled, "Envisioning 2020-Prepar-ing for Future Global Demand."
Woodall provided an update on the top political challenges facing today's livestock producers. Over the past year, producers have seen increased pressure from the legislative and regulatory fronts, with politically-charged efforts to regulate everything from dust, air, and water on farms. Other key political issues expected to be on the forefront in 2010 include the death tax, food safety reform and efforts to ban animal antibiotics. The cattle industry can also expect to see increased scrutiny in the area of livestock marketing, as the Departments of Justice and Agriculture gear up for a series of workshops to examine competition in agriculture markets. Other ongoing legislative issues include: mandatory animal identification, agricultural credit, immigration, country-of-origin labeling and horse slaughter.
NCBA will continue to lead the fight on behalf of cattle producers on these and other issues in Washington, DC.
ILC-USA 2010 was held Jan. 12 in Denver, Colo. For more information, visit: http://www.theisef. com/ilc-usa2010.aspx.
