The Texas Side Of Things

published: August 20th 2010 by: Jim Banner

I’ll admit it…I’m not a big fan of August; in fact it would be safe to say that it is my least favorite month of the year. I’m not exactly for sure why I don’t like August but it could be that it tends to be the hottest month of the year or maybe  I always realize that summer is nearly over and I must prepare myself once again to live according to a structured schedule....

On June 29, during a gun battle in Juarez, Mexico, seven stray AK 47 rifle rounds flew across the Rio Grande and hit city hall in downtown El Paso.     No one got hurt – at least on the Texas side of the river – but violence in another country had spilled over into the United States....

Old railroaders often passed on their accurate pocket watches to their sons. Sons and grandsons inherited swords from their military forebears. Law-men handed down their badges or favorite gun. I've got my granddad's heavy brass pica pole....

The proverbial light at the end of the tunnel may not be a train after all; finally the prospects for Texas cow/calf producers are improving. Abundant rainfall, stable grain prices, solid beef demand and upwardly trending calf prices create a brighter future for cattlemen....

Another NCBA Con-vention is just around the corner. Summer meetings are more convenient, because everything takes place in one hotel. Winter meetings mean scattered locations for hotels, and long walks down various convention center hallways looking for meetings....

Two weekends ago Mason, Texas celebrated their annual Roundup Weekend.  To be honest with you this is a big annual event for Mason consisting of a parade, a Jack Ass race around the courthouse square, the queen’s coronation and later that evening an amateur rodeo....

In 1906 traffic on Austin’s busy Congress Avenue amounted to a mix of horse-drawn wagons or buggies, single riders on horseback, electric-powered street cars rolling along iron tracks, the occasional horseless carriage and pedestrians who had to keep a sharp eye if they didn’t want to get run over....

AgriLife Tips

PURCHASE OR PRODUCE YOUR OWN HAY     With all of the recent rains, a good summer hay crop is being produced and that is a welcomed change from last year, when hay was being brought in from out of state to help meet the local cattle needs....

Just Your Standard Bull

Just about the time I think I have something figured out, someone or somebody throws me a curve ball! Last week—on June 30th to be precise—the USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) announced that the Pasture, Rangeland, Forage (PRF) Program was expanding for the 2011 crop year....

Next time you fry a stack of pancakes, imagine what it would be like if your life and the well-being of your children depended on it.      In the spring of 1874, Kate Polly and her husband Ephraim lived with their young daughters, two-year-old Katie and four-year-old Annie, in a dugout at the headwaters of Morgan Creek in what is now Hemphill County....

“Hurricane Season Keeps South Texas Farmers On Edge”     June 21st, the first day of summer,  arrived the day after Father’s Day.  And for those dads who are farmers and ranchers, the situation during the past year miraculously   changed from “gloom and doom” to “cheerful, yet guarded optimism....

Who speaks for the cattle producer? At ICA we believe we do. At each of the many other local, state and national livestock groups, they each think they speak for the cattle producer. When you get down to it, we all do, but every group thinks they do it best....

We had a great convention in College Station. One of the best things about having our meeting there is the excellent spea-kers we are able to engage. We were lucky enough to fit into Commissioner of Agricul-ture Todd Staples’ schedule, and he spoke to our family night group on Wednesday....

June is here and what a month it has started out to be!  It seems as though graduations and weddings have dominated my social calendar so far this month but that’s alright because they are all very special occasions....

Starting in the mid-1930s and continuing well into the '50s, Fritch must have had some of the most mannerly, patient postal patrons in the country.     Not that folks in this Panhandle town between Amarillo and Borger didn't occasionally get annoyed by slow mail delivery, a damaged parcel or misdirected letters, but customers must have been very careful about expressing any displeasure when Mrs....

This is a column that I can honestly say that I will only write one time in my entire life. I try not to make statements like this but since it is about my daughter graduating from high school, and I have only one child, I think I can safely say so....

The other day, a fellow Baby Boomer with a lot of white on not much hair, offered a compliment and then made it all the better with a funny story that more memorably got his message across.     Not in his exact words, but here it is:     An idealistic young English teacher fresh out of college and full of enthusiasm gets a job at a high school in a small Texas town where football scores were better remembered than TAKS percentiles....
